Eyjafjallajökull Kind of a strange title for a body of work based in Guatemala..... After a season ending couple of weeks at Mammoth ski resort I found myself packing my winter gear away ready for my flight back to the UK later that day. Having already checked out of my hotel, I was bound for the airport when the message came through, "Your Amerian airlines flight from LAX to LHR is cancelled due to the ongoing volcano ash disruption across the Atlantic. Please rebook by calling...." After an hour on hold I had a new flight booked for ten days later leaving me with very little idea of what to do next. Luckily I have built some great contacts over the years and was able to arrange with a UK based charity, Education for the Children, to fly down to Central America for this time. This was my first visit to Guatemala and what followed was a remarkable couple of weeks as I looked into the lives of the children they help educate. I'm sure there are many great Eyjafjallajökull related stories out there. When the whole world comes to a forced standstill like it did, there's room for people to meet others they never would have and experience things that weren't initially on their radar. As for me......I also met my current girlfriend whilst over there. I've got a lot to thank this volcano for.
